Walking Everywhere, and Anywhere!

Every now and then I will update this blog with thoughts about walking, and being a pedestrian in Southern California. Between 2014-2017, this blog also featured several posts about my bicycle adventures around Southern California, but as of 2018 I am back to just being a pedestrian. Riding a bike was fun until someone through a water bottle in my chain one day late at night, so since that time I have just felt safer walking.

Walking It Alone

When it comes to so many things, I feel I must walk it alone.  When a certain thing perplexes me, usually I am never allowed to share it with anyone because people accused me of complaining in years past, even though others are able to discuss things at length without people telling them they are complainers.  I just learned over the years I am not able to talk about things the way others can, and walking is ideal because it allows me to think of resolutions to problems.  What I have learned this year is nothing is as dark as it seems at the moment, and there is always a bit of humor in things that seem upsetting and outrageous at the moment.  Sometimes you jut have to get out and go walking, and allow the stress to float away.  Not only am I looking thinner than I have in years, but I no longer feel compelled to discuss things most people do not want to hear about anyway.

Walking Shoes Make Practical Christmas Gifts

Do you realize that walking shoes make practical Christmas gifts? Just to make sure you know the size and style of the walking shoe your recipient would prefer. Pedestrians and active people such as myself always appreciate thoughtful gifts for Christmas, such as walking shoes. I am not the extravagant type, so spending money on something I can use is more my cup of tea.

Going For A Walk Up In The San Bernardino Mountains

Going for a walk around the San Bernardino Mountains is the perfect way to burn calories after a large Thanksgiving meal.  Here are a few videos documenting my walks around the San Bernardino Mountains.

"Mount Baldy At Sunset" Photographic Prints by Bearie23 | RedBubble

I took a walk in the San Bernardino Mountains around sunset, and was impressed by the view of Mount Baldy in the distance. I highly recommend sunset walks up in the Southern California mountains as a good form of exercise, and low budget sight seeing.

Another Three Mile Walk

I love three mile walks because these burn so many calories and raise my metabolism. When I lost forty pounds over the last two years, I can attribute most of this to walking. Yes, I have been better about not drinking soda, but I do admit I drink coffee with chocolate in it a bit too much. Another plus to walking is it allows me to explore the town in a way driving through it simply cannot. Check out this picture I took of the Santa Fe Depot in Redlands the other day, it is quite interesting. Next time I want to take my nice camera along rather than using my cell phone camera, but the picture still turned out okay with the help of photo editing software.

I enjoyed glancing at the blue sky when I walk on a hot summer day. Just the thought of the blue sky makes me feel cooler, even in muggy weather.

Canvas Shoes Wear Out Fast When You Walk 30+ Miles Per Week

Canvas shoes definitely wear out fast when you walk 30+ miles per week.  I know I could purchase a pair of the so-called walking shoes, but I have always found these to be too clunky for the comfort of my feet.  I prefer to go with a flat canvas shoe that has generous padding.  I wore tone up type of shoes in the past, and those are just not for me.  Besides, I say what feel comfortable on your feel rather than just purchase a special walking shoe.

Walking Up Hills Is A Good Workout

Who needs to go to the gym when you can burn extra calories by walking up hills. If you live in a flat place, you could try walking up stairs, or even try walking on an incline treadmill. Walking is one of the most affordable and scenic ways to lose weight, which has worked for me.

Cute Palm Tree Shirt For Walking

As a pedestrian I often take my camera on my daily walks, and a few months ago I captured a lovely picture of palm trees during the early hours of the evening. This photograph has been used to design a fun new shirt, which would be perfect to wear on a walk. It is casual, but inspirational at the same time.

Celebrate Earth Day By Taking A Walk, And Taking Some Pictures

You can celebrate Earth Day by taking a walk, and taking some pictures of your travels. Walking is better for the environment than driving, and it allows you to slow down and see the scenery.

Why Do Southern Californians Fight Over Parking Spots

A few years a friend parked in a shopping complex that included a popular gym. Apparently he had parked in one of the spaces near the gym, and a lady came up to him and got mad because she claimed he took the spot she wanted. My friend was quite bewildered and had been there first, and this lady was upset because she had to walk a bit further to her gym.

Was she really upset about that, I mean really? I think it is great when people go to gym to work out, but why on earth would anyone balk over having to walk more than five feet from their car to the gym. One thing I never understood when people who are capable of strenuous cardio and weight lifting workouts at the gym are the ones who circle the parking lot looking for a space closest to the store.

Southern California has a high population density and people love to circle to find the front parking spots. Even people I know do this, and it drives me bonkers. Since I am a pedestrian I walk many miles per week, and I can walk across an entire shopping center parking lot in the less time than it takes many people in Southern California to fight over the front spots.

Take Public Transit On Your Next Trip To Oahu

Picture of me at the Pearl Harbor Memorial.
When I visited a Oahu, I discovered that TheBus provides excellent public transportation to getting to and from many tourist destination spots.  TheBus is also used by people who live in Hawaii, and is an economical alternative to those who do not want to drive while living or visiting this island.  When I was visiting Honolulu I got lost in 2002 on Easter Sunday, but even on that day there were enough buses running for me to find my way back to my hotel.  You can even take TheBus to well known spots such as The Pearl Harbor Memorial.

The Scariest Intersection I Have Ever Crossed: Redlands Blvd and California Street

This intersection is very scary to cross, especially in the middle of the day when drivers only give you about two seconds to get across it.  Yes, I can make it across the four lane road in two seconds because I am scared of being hit on a continuous basis.  Right when you go to cross on the walking light, well you usually have a driver who is way to eager beaver to make their right hand California turn on a red light.  I know they must be in a hurry, but I can guarantee they will get wherever they are going faster than I am.  Often I have to gesture and point out that I have the walking light, which should be able to see if they are obeying the rules of the road.  On too many occasions I have been moored in the middle of California Street when five cars decide to all make their right hand turns on a red light, and the ones behind them cannot see you.  So I am truly hoping that the drivers along this intersection shape up and start obeying California traffic laws once the school opens up.

If you are driving, then it is California law that you must yield pedestrians when they have the walking light.  Too many times the people who make the a right hand turn when you were walking across the street were on their phone texting someone, and I know because I seen this more than a hundred times over a four year period while cross this intersection.  It happens at others, but this one is the worst.  I have nearly been hit on numerous occasions by people doing that, but that is just another example of driver negligence.  As a pedestrian you truly have to look out for your safety because often drivers are texting, eating, and putting on make-up, and you will see them before they see you.

Walking In The Snow

When you have a day off and are up in the mountains, it is always quite enjoyable to take a nature walk in the snow.  I recently enjoy my last trip to the San Bernardino Mountains after a beautiful snow storm left everything glazed with the glistening white frozen stuff.

I Am A Pedestrian And Not Buying A Car From You, No Matter How Desperate You Act!

For the last three or so years I have walked by several car dealerships on my way to work.  There is one car dealership where one or two guys (depending on the day I walk by) who act very desperate in their attempts to get me to notice them.  Three years ago they used to shout heels on wheels to me, and eventually they stopped when they noticed I was not going to buy a car.

However, over the last few months their desperate behavior has re-emerged.  Either one or two guys will scream "hello, hello," at me, and if I do not respond, then he or his friend will saying something ridiculous like "I like your socks, I like your hat, or I like your shoes."  See I am an introvert that does not thrive on interacting with car salesmen, and just because I walk by a car dealership does not mean I am interested in buying anything from you!

This car dealership just happens to be on the route that I like to walk to and from work, and why is it I walk by two other dealerships where no one acts this way, but at this particular dealership car salesmen are complimenting me on my socks?  Okay I am not sure what that is about, but I noticed yesterday when I walked by talking on my cell phone there were no silly comments because they probably do not want others to hear what they say.

Yes, I know some people would say I should talk to their manager or supervisor, but I am not going to do that.  I just find their behavior hilarious, and these two guys must be pretty bored if all they have better to do is compliment me on my socks.

Palm Tree Mountain Sunset Walking Shoes

I used fabric markers to draw a picture of palm trees and the San Bernardino Mountains at sunset on a pair of canvas shoes. You might as well have a comfortable pair of shoes if you are going to be walking all the time, so why not decorate to make a fashion statement.

I used fabric markers to draw palm trees and the San Bernardino Mountains at sunset on these canvas shoes.
