Some of us are pedestrians because we hate driving. Walking is a healthy and smart way to cut down on transportation costs and the gym bill. Take time to celebrate nature by walking through it! Now that I am also riding a bicycle, this blog will feature some of my thoughts on this new mode of transportation.

Walking Everywhere, and Anywhere!
Every now and then I will update this blog with thoughts about walking, and being a pedestrian in Southern California. Between 2014-2017, this blog also featured several posts about my bicycle adventures around Southern California, but as of 2018 I am back to just being a pedestrian. Riding a bike was fun until someone through a water bottle in my chain one day late at night, so since that time I have just felt safer walking.

Walking Six Miles In The Rain
A six mile round trip walk in the Southern California rain can be enjoyable once or twice a month, but I sure hope it stops raining sometime tonight Also, as I was walking today I had to be more careful than on dry days because cars were hydroplaning, and some motorists tend to be more aggressive during rainstorms. A few did not even want to stop for the pedestrians at the walking light, but there is nothing new about that. Walking is a work out in itself, and on a raining day you have to be very vigilante for your safety. One thing I recommend is a good structured umbrella and a warm coat as the regalia needed for staying dry and warm while walking during heavy rainstorms.

It sounds like quite a workout and a challenge. I used to walk everywhere when I lived in Taiwan, and it rained often. At first, I tried to take an umbrella with me, but it's so windy there that I often had umbrellas destroyed by the wind, and so I preferred to walk without an umbrella most of the time, because the struggle with the wind was hardly worth it. But my students were always so gallant, that whenever they saw me walking in the rain without an umbrella, they would run to shelter me with theirs. It was well meant, but I really wish they hadn't. I was fine.
ReplyDeleteOn windy days it is easier to walk without an umbrella, I agree. Today I decided to use it as it was not windy, and it was pour down quite fast. Honestly, the rain is a nice change, but I do not want it again tomorrow. One day of lots of rain is good for me.
